Quick summary of Gemini

Gemini is Google's family of AI assistants and language models, developed by Google DeepMind. The product lineup includes Gemini 2.5 Pro (frontier reasoning), Gemini 2.5 Flash (fast/cheap), and Gemini Ultra in Workspace. It's the only frontier AI deeply integrated into Google Workspace apps (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets, Meet), and uniquely offers a 1M-token context window (2M rolling out in 2026) — by far the longest among major AI assistants. Best for Workspace customers, long-document analysis, Deep Research synthesis reports, and anyone wanting the most generous free AI tier. Free tier offers Gemini 1.5 Pro and Flash with reasonable limits; Google AI Pro is $20/month, AI Ultra is $250/month for heavy users. Workspace plans bundle Gemini at $20-30/user/month. Direct competitors: ChatGPT (more consumer polish, better image gen), Claude (better writing/code), Grok (X integration), Perplexity (search-focused). Gemini wins on context length, Workspace integration, and free tier generosity; Claude wins on code; ChatGPT wins on consumer UX.

⏱ 30-second verdict

  • 1M-token context, longest of any major AI assistant
  • Deep Workspace integration if you live in Gmail/Docs/Drive
  • Consumer UX less polished than ChatGPT

About

Gemini is Google's conversational AI that helps with writing, brainstorming, coding, research, and image generation. It integrates seamlessly with Google Workspace, allowing you to draft emails, analyze documents, and create content directly within your workflow. The tool offers multimodal capabilities, understanding text, images, and code.

🎯 Why it's useful

Founders can use Gemini to quickly draft pitch decks, analyze market research, generate marketing copy, and get coding assistance—all while staying within the Google ecosystem they likely already use.

💜 Our take

The deep Google Workspace integration is a game-changer if you're already living in Gmail and Docs. Plus, the image generation and multimodal understanding punch above their weight.

How indie founders use Gemini

Long-document analysis

Drop in 100+ research papers, a year of customer interview transcripts, or your full codebase. 1M tokens is enough for tasks no other major AI can do in one shot.

Deep Research reports

Ask Gemini to research a market, a competitor, or a technical topic. Get back a 10-20 page synthesis with citations in 10-15 minutes.

Gmail + Docs productivity

Help Me Write in Gmail drafts replies using inbox context. Docs generates first-pass content aware of your existing files. If you live in Workspace, this is the AI integration that matters.

Audio Overviews

Turn any document, paper, or topic into a podcast-style discussion. The NotebookLM feature now in Gemini. Uniquely good for learning while commuting.

✦ Hand-tested by Tiny Startups

Gemini got really good in 2025 and the conversation has shifted. It used to be the AI you ignored for ChatGPT and Claude. Now it's a legitimate contender, especially if you live in Google Workspace. Gemini 2.5 Pro is genuinely strong. Tops several leaderboards. Has the longest context of any major AI (1M tokens, with 2M coming) and is deeply integrated into Google Workspace (Docs, Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Meet). For founders inside the Google ecosystem, Gemini is increasingly the default AI even if Claude or ChatGPT is technically better on specific tasks. The killer features for me: 1M-token context means you can drop in 50+ research papers, a year of customer emails, or your entire codebase in one prompt and ask cross-cutting questions. Deep Research mode generates 10-20 page synthesis reports on any topic. Better than the original ChatGPT version because Gemini grounds in live Google Search. Audio Overviews (the NotebookLM feature now in Gemini) turn any source into a podcast-style discussion. Surprisingly addictive for learning while walking or driving. For founders, the Workspace integration is the real unlock. Gmail Help Me Write drafts emails using inbox context. Docs Help Me Write generates content aware of your existing documents. Sheets has data-aware formulas via Gemini. If you live in Workspace, the productivity gain is meaningful and free of additional friction. The pricing is competitive. Gemini's free tier is the most generous of any frontier AI (1.5 Pro and Flash with reasonable limits). Google One AI Premium at $20/month gets you Gemini 2.5 Pro, Deep Research, 2 TB of Drive storage, and Workspace integration. For Workspace customers, Gemini is bundled into Business Standard and above for $20-30/user/month, effectively free vs paying $20 for ChatGPT Plus on top. The annoyances: the brand is muddled (Gemini, Bard, Vertex AI, AI Studio. Google's naming is famously chaotic). The consumer UX is less polished than ChatGPT. The model sometimes over-hedges compared to Claude's measured directness. But the 1M context, free tier generosity, and Workspace integration are real wins. My recommendation: if you're on Google Workspace, Gemini is the obvious default. If not, it's still worth using free for long-context tasks and Deep Research, even if your primary AI is Claude or ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini free?

Yes. Google offers a generous free tier with access to Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini Flash, and the 1M-token context window. Google AI Pro at $20/month unlocks Gemini 2.5 Pro, unlimited Deep Research, and Workspace app integration.

Gemini vs ChatGPT vs Claude, when should I use Gemini?

Gemini for long-context tasks (1M tokens beats both competitors), Deep Research, and if you're inside Google Workspace. Claude wins for writing and code, ChatGPT for consumer polish and image generation. Many founders use Gemini specifically for long documents and ChatGPT/Claude for everything else.

What is Gemini Deep Research?

A mode where Gemini autonomously browses the web for 5-15 minutes, gathering and synthesising sources into a 10-20 page report on your topic. It cites sources, follows references, and produces something close to a junior analyst's output. Free tier limits Deep Research; Pro removes the cap.

Is Gemini in Workspace worth it?

Yes if you live in Gmail/Docs/Drive. Help Me Write drafts emails with inbox context, Docs generates content with awareness of your existing files, Sheets has Gemini-powered data formulas. The productivity gain is real for knowledge work.

What's the difference between Gemini and Vertex AI / AI Studio?

Gemini is the consumer/Workspace product. AI Studio is the developer playground for testing prompts. Vertex AI is the enterprise API platform with extra controls, regions, and integrations. Same underlying models. Different surfaces.
